Workshop on "Carbon nanocapsules and their characterization by thermal analysis and electron microscopy", held at ICMAB-CSIC (Barcelona) on the 29th June 2012 as part of the training program for RADDEL. Attendants (from left to right): Gerard Tobias (Project coordinator and workshop speaker), Jorge Pérez (Project manager), Laura Cabana (PhD student at ICMAB), Stefania Sandoval (PhD student at ICMAB), Sonia de Munari (ESR3 from UOX), Reida Rutte (ESR4 from UOX), Jessica Nava (PhD student at ICMAB), Alexandre Ponrouch (Postdoc at ICMAB) and Mansur Ahmed (visiting student at ICMAB).

A workshop on the synthesis, properties and applications of carbon nanocapsules has been held at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) as part of RADDEL´s Training Program. Sonia de Munari (ESR3) and Reida Rutte (ESR4) from the University of Oxford (UOX) participated in this workshop, along with other students and postdocs from the Institute. Gerard Tobias (Project coordinator and workshop speaker) gave a brief introduction about the Institute and the origin of the RADDEL ITN. Then, the synthetic aspects of carbon nanomaterials and in particular carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were detailed. The theoretical aspects of the purification, shortening and filling of the nanotubes were introduced, with special emphasis on the use of thermal analysis and electron microscopy as powerful techniques for the characterization of these materials. Finally, the functionalization of closed and filled CNTs and their use as nanocapsules for biomedical applications was also mentioned.
